Call for recently completed or ongoing initiatives in food environments

Hi everyone, I am a Knowledge Translation Scientist at the NCCEH. I'm looking for provincial or local projects or initiatives to improve local food environments that have recently been implemented, evaluated, or are currently ongoing related to the following areas:

Community food environment

  • Farmer’s markets
  • Mobile healthy food vending
  • Providing or promotion financial incentives for healthy food retailers
  • Community and school gardens
  • Improve transportation/access to full service grocery stores

Consumer food environment

  • Healthy corner stores
  • Within-store promotion and education
  • Menu labelling
  • Healthy check-out lanes

If you are involved in projects related to any of the above, I'd love to chat with you!

Hi Tina,

In St. John's, we just recently opened a new Community Market (Farmer's Market), and I am working with local organizations to build a framework to support community gardens on city-land in the City of St. John's. Some of this work is happening through my position with the City of St. John's, while other work is happening through our local food policy council - which is also exploring a funding opportunity to conduct a community-led food assessment across St. John's.

In previous work, I was involved in a healthy corner store project that was taking root in rural parts of Newfoundland and Labrador, which may reignite in the coming year (I will have more information on the Healthy Corner Stores NL revival next week).

I'm happy to chat about food initiatives anytime! I can also connect you with colleagues of mine at Food First NL who work extensively to improve food environments across our province, with particular focus in rural and remote regions in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Thanks Bruce! This is great, I would love to chat more about these initiatives! I will reach out via email.
